EURUSD has been coiling inside a 60-pip range for eight straight sessions. Daily ATR is at a two-month low. This kind of compression rarely lasts — the question isn't if it breaks, it's which way.
Why range compression matters
Volatility mean-reverts. When ATR collapses, it always expands again — usually within 5-10 sessions. This is one of the most reliable statistical patterns in FX. What varies is direction, and that's where levels come in.
Traders who wait for the resolution and trade the break get an edge that random entries can never provide. The pattern is the setup; the break is the trigger.
The levels that matter
- Upper edge — 1.0985. Daily resistance from the August 18 rejection. Above this, next stop 1.1035, then 1.1080.
- Lower edge — 1.0920. H4 support tested five times. Break here opens 1.0870 quickly.
- Trigger volume. A break without volume is a fake. Watch for 1.5x-2x average bar volume on the breakout candle.
What the AI Copilot is flagging
Our LevelEngine terminal currently shows EURUSD in "waiting" state — no directional bias, high confluence at both edges. Copilot won't fire signals until price resolves. That patience is a feature, not a bug.
Analytically, the cleanest setup in a compressing market is often not one at all. The structure typically clarifies after the break — patience is a feature of good analysis.
Two ways to play it
Aggressive: limit orders 5 pips beyond each edge, wide stops (25 pips), first target 40 pips. Takes both directions; whichever fires wins.
Conservative: wait for a full H4 close outside the range, then enter on the retest of the broken edge. Slower but higher win rate.
Bias tilts slightly bearish
D1 structure shows lower highs since mid-August. That gives a mild edge to a break lower — not enough to skip long setups, but enough to size up on shorts if 1.0920 gives way.
Watch DXY at the same time. A rally in the dollar index above 104.20 is the confirmation for a EURUSD short. Both need to move together for high conviction.
Timing
ECB minutes drop Thursday. NFP the following Friday. One of those two typically breaks compressions like this. Be ready both sessions.
