Gold trades 23 hours a day, but 80% of the real movement happens in about 6 of them. If you're trading XAUUSD outside those hours, you're paying spread for chop. Here's the map.
Asian session: mostly noise
From 00:00-06:00 UTC (Tokyo/Sydney), gold typically moves 8-15 pips per hour with wide spreads. Liquidity is thin. Prop desks are half-staffed. Any move is easily faked out by a single large order.
Traders who fire signals in this window often eat 4-5 pip spreads on entry and exit, killing R:R before the trade even develops. Avoid unless you already have a position from London/NY.
London session: the real workhorse
07:00-11:00 UTC is where XAUUSD comes alive. London gold desks (LBMA fix at 10:30 and 15:00 UTC) drive most of the day's range. Average hourly move: 25-40 pips. Spreads tighten to 0.3-0.5.
Best setups fire between 07:30 and 10:00. Watch for the London breakout after Asia's tight range — gold loves this pattern.
NY overlap: the money hours
12:30-16:00 UTC (14:30-18:00 for daylight-saving months) is when London and NY both trade. Volume triples. This is where most of gold's daily range is set.
US economic releases (NFP, CPI, FOMC) always drop at 12:30 or 18:00 UTC. If you're not paying attention to the calendar, you'll get run over.
Gold is a session-driven instrument. Trade when London is at the desk and NY is joining in. Everything else is a coin flip with slippage.
Late NY: the trap
After 16:00 UTC, London goes home and NY starts winding down. Volume falls. This is where "gold reversal" fakeouts happen most often — thin books make it easy to spike price back through a stop cluster.
Trail your stops or take partial profits before 16:00 if you're up.
Practical trading plan
- Prep: Read levels 06:30-07:00 UTC. Plan trades for London open.
- Trade 1: London breakout, 08:00-09:30 UTC. Best R:R of the day.
- Trade 2: NY momentum continuation, 13:00-15:00 UTC. Follow trend of morning.
- Stop: No new trades after 16:00 UTC. Manage existing only.
Two trades a day, in the right windows. That's the recipe most of our profitable subscribers follow.
