CPI is the second-most-important number the trader watches every month — right after Non-Farm Payrolls. It drops mid-month at 12:30 UTC and it can rewrite the Fed's forward path in a single line. Traders who understand what actually moves the market on CPI have a huge advantage over those who just watch the headline number.
What CPI actually measures
CPI — the Consumer Price Index — tracks price changes for a basket of goods and services consumed by US households. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes two flavors: Headline CPI (includes food and energy) and Core CPI (excludes them because they're volatile).
Markets pay much more attention to Core CPI. Food and energy prices swing wildly on weather and geopolitics. Core CPI shows the sticky inflation that policy actually controls.
Why CPI moves the dollar and gold
The mechanism is simple:
- Hot CPI (higher than expected) → market repricing higher-for-longer Fed → dollar up, gold down, indices down.
- Cold CPI (lower than expected) → market pricing in Fed cuts sooner → dollar down, gold up, indices up.
- In-line CPI → small algo-driven whip, then reversion to prior trend.
For a level trader, this means every CPI print reprices the entire yield curve, and everything correlated to yields (which is basically every liquid instrument) moves with it.
The setup that works on CPI
The reliable CPI setup mirrors NFP with one key difference: CPI reactions often last longer because they change Fed expectations for weeks, not just hours.
- Pre-release: Mark 4-hour range before 12:30 UTC. Note our daily buy above / sell below zones on XAUUSD, EURUSD, and US30.
- First 60 seconds: Do not trade. Watch the initial spike.
- Minute 5-15: Look for a rejection back toward the pre-release range if price has extended beyond a major daily zone.
- Hour 1-4: If price consolidates at the new extreme after minute 15, take the continuation trade toward the next daily zone.
The best CPI trades are often taken 2-4 hours after the release, not in the first 5 minutes. That's when the initial noise has cleared and real positioning shows up.
What matters more than the headline
Watch these three lines in the CPI report:
- Core CPI YoY vs. expected. This is the number. If it beats by 0.2% or more, hot. If it misses by 0.2% or more, cold.
- Shelter inflation. ~30% of CPI weight. Rents and owners' equivalent rent. Sticky, hard for Fed to influence.
- Services ex-shelter (super-core). The metric Powell personally quotes. If this reaccelerates, expect hawkish tape.
How CPI differs from PCE
PCE (Personal Consumption Expenditures) is the Fed's preferred inflation measure — it drops later in the month, uses different weights, and tends to run slightly cooler than CPI. If you're planning your macro calendar, know both dates. Traders often over-react to CPI because it prints first; PCE is what actually informs FOMC decisions.
The CPI trade to avoid
Don't fade a big directional CPI move on the same day if it also breaks a major daily zone with volume. Multi-day trends are often born on CPI mornings. Fading the initial spike (5-30 min) is fine. Fading the whole day after CPI has broken through a level is not.
Sizing and setup mechanics
- Size down. Half your normal position size, minimum. CPI can print 3-standard-deviation moves.
- Wider stops. Expect 30-50% wider stops than a normal day. If that ruins your R:R, don't trade.
- No overnight positions before CPI. Ever. Flatten on Monday if the release is Wednesday.
- One trade, not five. The initial reaction is the biggest move. Take your one setup and stop.
Best symbols to trade on CPI
- XAUUSD — inversely correlated to real yields, cleanest CPI trades
- EURUSD — pure dollar play, tight spreads
- NAS100 — most rate-sensitive index, biggest moves
- DXY — the dollar itself, cleanest macro signal
The zones do the heavy lifting
Our daily levels are computed pre-CPI at 23:00 UTC the previous day. They already incorporate implied volatility from options markets, so the zones widen automatically on CPI days. Trust them: if XAUUSD is at the sell below zone after a hot print, that's your context for the fade trade.
